"ICT has been been at the heart of teaching and learning at Invicta for many years. The Tablet PC presents new opportunities that will transform the way we use technology to improve our teachers and pupils experience of education, and make them more efficient."
Mr Danielsen was impressed by the Tablet PC's portability and computing power, instantly recognising the advantages such a flexible device would bring the schools staff and pupils. Although packed full of exciting new features, the most compelling reason for the school to invest in the Tablet PC was the way which it seamlessly integrates in to situations where it would not be practical to use a Desktop or Notebook PC.
During the initial trial of the 15 Tablet PCs, Mr Danielsen saw the Tablet bring raw computing power to every day school scenarios previously the domain of the pen and paper.
Managing pupil data Teachers were able to use the Tablet PC to take registration at the start of class and update the school MIS database instantly using the Tablets integrated wireless technology. Equally whenever required, teachers were able to access pupil information wherever they were in the school.
Preparing lesson plans and content The Tablet PC gave the teachers the freedom to plan and prepare lessons whether they were in class, in the staff room or on the train home. Teachers also enjoyed being able to add hand drawn sketches and diagrams to documents making assignments and personal notes more interesting.
Managing time and materials With the Tablet PC under their arm, teachers and pupils were always in control of their timetables and were fully prepared for class with easy access to assignments, homework and lesson plans.
Dazzling documents Pupils used the Tablets extensively in the class to take notes that were then saved for use late. Having the ability to make hand written notes and convert these notes to text was a real hit with the girls who also enjoyed adding sketched pictures and diagrams to their documents.
Marking homework Pupils and staff were able to exchange assignments and finished work easily using the Community Connect 3 Topics. After receiving pupils homework electronically, teachers were able to add comments directly into the document and return it to the pupils network folder for collection.
To offer a summary, Mr Danielsen concluded that the school has been delighted with the way in which staff and pupils have embraced the new technology, finding it straightforward and motivating to use. Following the trial the school will be investing in a further 180 Tablet PCs which will be distributed to the teaching staff and the new Year 7 girls beginning in September. The schools longer term objective is to develop a sustainable development plan that will eventually equip all pupils with their own Tablet PC.
