How to install software or drivers onto a tablet PC if you don't have the CD drive or floppy drive accessories
Published Date : 06 Nov 2002   Last Updated : 16 Oct 2012   Content Ref: TEC63856

Symptoms

These are some example scenarios:

  • You have purchased a new device such as a printer and need to install the software.
  • You have some new software and need to load it onto your tablet PC.
  • You need an updated driver for one of your components.
  • You want to copy files from another computer to your tablet PC.

But how can you do this if you don't have a CD or floppy disk drive?

Procedure

Memory stick/pen drive/external storage device

If you have one of these devices, you may be able to copy the software you require to the device via another computer, and then copy it to the tablet.

This process is probably easier for downloaded installations, but can also be used for software on CD, as long as the installation doesn't look for the CD during the installation.

Internet access

If you can access the Internet, you have access to the following resources:

  • Driver downloads.
  • Freeware and Shareware programs.
  • Files sent by email.
  • Microsoft® Windows® updates.
  • Antivirus updates.

Note: Before downloading, make a note of the size of the files that you are transferring to your tablet PC. Like any PC, the speed of your connection will determine the length of time it will take to download a program or file.

Network access

Network access can be as basic as connecting your tablet PC to another computer that has a network card, using a crossover cable, or connecting to a company network.

Network access, with the correct access rights, can give you access to almost any resource which is available on a network. This includes:

  • CD access.
  • Software installation.
  • Driver downloads.
  • Freeware and Shareware programs.
  • Files sent by email.
  • Windows updates.
  • Antivirus updates.

Many of these may be available from the Internet via the network, which is likely to have a faster download time than a dialup Internet connection.
