On 1st June 2011, we launched our 'Genius on a Shoestring' competition, inviting all schools and colleges across the UK to submit their genius ideas: innovative ideas to enhance learning on a tight budget. This is a great chance to share some of the imaginative and inspiring things that you're doing within your school.

It is clear that our children's future will depend on their abilities to innovate and collaborate. As educators, we must not only create a climate for that but model it too. Even the OECD recently identified that the world's most improving education systems are committed to those principles; it's why I am delighted to be able to help and support The Genius on a Shoestring initiative!" – Richard Gerver, Educationalist

Key dates for your diary:

  • 16th September 2011 – Registration of interest deadline.
  • 30th September 2011 – Deadline for submitting a 2 minute video and 500 words showcasing your innovation.
  • 7th October 2011 – The videos will go live on the website and you can start encouraging all your family, friends and colleagues to vote on your video.
  • 4th November 2011 – Voting closes.
  • 11th November 2011 – Regional shortlist of finalists will be announced.

The four regional finals

The regional finalists will then be asked to attend a presentation evening at one of the 4 host schools around the country for the chance to win £1,000 to spend in our shop. The entries will be judged by a panel of judges including a leading educationalist at each regional final: one of  Richard Gerver, David Cameron, Brian Lightman and Neil Emery:

The timing of the Genius on a Shoestring competition is perfect. Schools want to improve all the time, but the financial climate really forces them to be innovative and creative, especially about technology. A competition like this will reward those that are and will highlight their practice for others. We can't stagnate in the changing and challenging times that we live in, but we can't rely on buying success. We need to be economic without sacrificing our ambitions. I really hope that "Genius" will show us how to do that and I am delighted to be involved with it" – David Cameron, Educationalist

The national final at BETT 2012

The 4 winners of the regional finals will go through to a national final which will be held at the BETT 2012 RM Education VIP event in January and the national winner will win an extra £5000!
