Data released by the Department for Education today shows that the number of academies in England has now reached 658, of which 274 are sponsored academies and 384 are converting academies. The total number of new converting academies opening in May was just 27, down from 162 in April. In total there has been 1070 applications to convert.
Almost one-third (31 percent) of secondary schools are either now academies or are in the porcess of becoming an academy. However the number of primary academies and primary schools applying for academy status remains low at less that two percent of the primary schools estate. Cornwall provides the highest number of primary schools applications to convert with 21 (9 percent of the primary schools in that region), but more than ten percent of the primary schools in Darlington, Torbay, Herefordshire, Bromley and Swindon have applied.
