Introduction
We believe this issue may also affect some computers made by other manufacturers, and if you have concerns we would advise you to talk to your other suppliers. We can only give advice about RM computers. In RM computers some, but not all, 48X and 52X speed drives are affected. This issue does not affect any RM computers manufactured since the end of July 2001, and does not affect any RM NoteBook computers.
Are your current machines safe?
This does not affect any RM computers manufactured since the end of July 2001.
It only affects those machines that we have notified you of. If you have any doubt about
any RM machine, you can go to our website (www.rm.com/safety) and enter the serial
number and we will be able to tell you if your machine is affected or not. I can request
a logon on your behalf, or click here to register online. Please confirm your email
address or telephone so that we can let you know your username and password.
Does it affect servers?
Potentially. If the serial number of your server is on the list that has been sent to you then it is affected. If it isn't on the list that it is unaffected.
Does this cover network machines too?
Potentially. If the serial number of any of your network stations are on the list that has been sent to you then they are affected. If not on the list then they are unaffected.
Will notebooks be affected?
RM Notebooks are unaffected due to the drive speed.
What about my non-RM machines?
We can't comment about non-RM machines. If you are concerned you may wish to speak to your supplier.
Why only some machines?
As far as we are aware, and on the basis of research carried out to date, only some machines that have 48 or 52 speed drives are affected by this issue.
Where do I find the serial number on a machine?
The serial number is on a label that is usually found in one of two places. This label is always on the very back of the computer (where the keyboard and mouse are connected), and if your computer was purchased after July 1998 it may also have a silver label on either the left or right hand side of the case as well.
How can I identify drives?
Please tell us the model number of the drive and we can tell you if this drive is affected.
There are instructions linked to this question on the web to show you how to find the model number.
How you establish the model number of your CD drive.
Does it affect my CD rewriters?
We have checked all CD rewriters sold by RM and they are unaffected. However,
faster CDR drives are now available on the market that spin fast enough to shatter disks.
Does it affect my home CD player?
We can only talk about RM equipment but since home CD players run at a much slower speed we do not expect this issue to affect your HIFI equipment.
