This section provides a detailed overview of RM's policy for specifying and sourcing optical drives, covering CD ROM, DVD and CD RW devices.

01 Firmware
01.01 All optical devices (CD/DVD) supplied by RM shall be firmware flashable in the field
01.02 Flashable firmware to 40X (maximum) will be confirmed prior to product selection by PTEC
01.03 Flash utilities and 40X (maximum) firmware will provided to RM prior to product validation by PDEV
01.04 Any evolutionary changes in firmware will always by supplied in a 40X (maximum) version
   
02 Crush Resistance
02.01 Vendors will provide RM with documented evidence of their device's design features that will prevent the occurrence of CD/DVD crush
02.01.01 Design features addressing CD/DVD crush prevention
02.01.02 Test results for physical crush testing to RM SVT039nn
02.02 Devices from vendors unable to provide documentary evidence for 02.01.01 & 02.01.02 will only be selected if documentary evidence for Egress Resistance is provided via 03.01.01 & 03.01.02
02.03 Under exceptional circumstances, RM will perform crush resistance testing for drives for which the vendors are unable to provide documentary evidence for 02.01.01 & 02.01.02
02.03.01 Crush testing will be performed according to RM SVT039nn
02.03.02 Authorisation for such exceptional work will be obtained from the Product Development Manager
   
03 Egress Resistance
03.01 Vendors will provide RM with documented evidence of their risk assessments for CD/DVD egress:
03.01.01 Design features addressing CD/DVD containment in the event of a crush
03.01.02 Test results for physical egress testing to RM SVT039nn
03.02 Devices from vendors unable to provide documentary evidence for 03.01.01 & 03.01.02 will not be selected, unless clause 03.03 applies
03.03 Under exceptional circumstances, RM will perform egress resistance testing for drives for which the vendors are unable to provide documentary evidence for 03.01.01 & 03.01.02
03.03.01 Egress testing will be performed according to RM SVT039nn
03.03.02 Authorisation for such exceptional work will be obtained from the Product Development Manager

04.01 Flashable firmware

05 Validation Checklist
