Support pupils with special needs
ClozePro includes built-in support for a range of special needs including dyslexia, learning difficulties and physical disabilities.
ClozePro and Symbols: By adding the symbol set of your choice to ClozePro, you can create cloze activities that are more accessible for pupils who benefit from this level of support.
ClozePro activities can be easily adapted for pupils of all abilities. By having the whole class working on differentiated tasks, you ensure that those pupils who need symbol support feel as included and involved as the rest of the group.
The way in which you incorporate the symbols is up to you; choose to have the symbols appear in the main text of the activity, in the missing words grid, or both! ClozePro displays both the symbol and the corresponding text, encouraging learners to make the connection between the words and the images. By using the built-in speech support, learners develop their understanding of the link between the symbols they see and the words they hear.
The following symbol libraries are available to use with ClozePro:
- Widgit Symbols
- Mayer-Johnson PCS
- SymbolStix
Learning Difficulties
ClozePro's flexibility enables you to meet the learning needs of all your students, including those with learning difficulties.
Speech support: High quality, British English speech enables pupils to listen to the sentence they are working on, and to 'try out' words by listening to them before placing them in the gaps.
Customizable prompts: When you create an activity, you choose whether or not pupils will have access to the prompt tool, and if so, the nature of the prompt that will be given. This is a useful way to be able to give additional help while still requiring input from the pupil. The report automatically records all uses of the prompt.
Differentiation: The flexibility of ClozePro enables you to easily create differentiated activities for pupils of different abilities. Methods of simplifying an activity include:
- Using a simplified version of the text
- Removing fewer words from the text
- Splitting up the text into smaller chunks, so that each page contains just one paragraph or even just one sentence
- Supporting words with pictures
- Limiting the number of choices for each gap
- Varying the length of each gap according to the correct answer
- ClozePro makes it easy to make these changes, so you can very quickly customize your activities to suit the varied needs of your pupils.
Low Vision
In addition to the high quality speech and the clean, uncluttered screen layout, ClozePro includes a range of extensive accessibility options for pupils with low vision.
- Customizable zoom options
- Special high-contrast colour options
- Variable line spacing
- Large toolbar option
Switch access
When working with special needs pupils, it can be difficult to discover their level of comprehension. ClozePro v2 is a powerful and easy-to-use tool that will help you find out how well your pupils are progressing.
You can set up activities to suit all ability levels from very early readers to secondary school level. Everything in an activity is switch accessible - you can access the prompt, turn the pages, and fill in the gaps in any order. For pupils that find blocks of text difficult, you can break up text so that you present them with just one sentence at a time.
You can leave pupils to complete a whole set of activities on their own, and then track their progress by looking at the report. If you are working with early readers, then you can use symbols if you wish, as well as pictures from the Crick Picture Library.
Pupils can use ClozePro v2 with no supervision at all, and the comprehensive reporting enables you to assess their abilities objectively.
