New Primary Framework for literacy
The first four strands of the new literacy framework (speaking, listening and responding, group discussion and interaction and drama) for all year groups, invites many activities which are well served by podcasting. Specific references to podcasting are also included. Visit the DfES literacy framework and search for 'podcasting'.

What is podcasting?
Podcasts are sound files that are made in the same way as radio programmes. What makes a podcast different is that it can be automatically downloaded to your computer and then loaded onto your MP3 player without you having to do anything except connect the two together. This is easy and very convenient. It keeps an eye on requested programmes and goes back to look for updates regularly so that you don't miss episodes of your favourites.

Podcasting lets anybody with a microphone; a computer and an Internet connection publish audio broadcasts that can be listened to by people anywhere in the world. Podcasts are free and as they can be automatically downloaded to portable media players, they can be listened to whenever it's convenient.

Podcasting in education
We believe that podcasting really is set to revolutionise both teaching and learning in schools and is suitable for any age and any subject. There are many reasons why podcasting in education is becoming more important, including:

  • it can be tailored to any curriculum area
  • it provides the potential to support or extend the work of any pupil with special needs
  • it is useful for children who miss sessions through absence
  • podcasting provides a fantastic parent / community : school link
  • it could bring a whole new approach to homework, e.g. audio notes to reinforce learning
  • it improves speaking and listening skills - an area highlighted in the new Primary National Strategy Framework for literacy
  • it improves motivation, ICT skills, teamwork and audience appreciation and consideration
