There is a huge range of applications included straight from the box including Open Office. The miniBook launches into a user interface which is arranged by tabs, then items (or icons) and sub-items / icons - some go to web links and other launch programs For details of these menus and items you can view our pdf.
The Windows version of the miniBook comes with Windows XP Home, Works and Live Services.
The minibook comes with a variety of software applications preinstalled that include Open Office for documents, spreadsheets, presentations and a PDF reader. Additional Linux applications can be added, but cannot be accessed via the menu. They can only be accessed via file manager or a terminal window (similar to My Computer or CMD in Windows).
The Windows version can have applications added in the normal way you would with any computer, subject to drive space.
Yes, you can connect the Linux miniBook to your Community Connect 3 network via two methods. You can connect it as an unmanaged device to access; home directories, internet and printers. It is recommended to only use this option if the miniBook is used by a single user. This method does not provide Community Connect 3 management software or Group Policies. Therefore you may wish to consider any network security implications when attaching the minibook to your network as an unmanaged device. For further information please visit www.rm.com/minibook/support. Please note that a Windows XP Home device is unable to attach to a Microsoft Windows Server network and join the domain therefore is unable to connect to a Community Connect 3 or Community Connect 4. The second option is through connecting your Linux miniBook as a thin client to a Terminal Member Server on your Community Connect 3 (via RM Client Connect) or Community Connect 4 network.
An alternative is provided with the miniBook - Open Office, which has word processor, spreadsheet and presentation packages. Open Office can open MS files and save them back in MS format if you wish to do that rather than create in Open Office. You cannot add MS Office to the Linux based version. The Windows version, available now, will have Works as standard and has the ability to upgrade to MS Office (subject to the appropriate license and available storage space).
RM recommends that you save any of your data to an external backup device or to your network (if connected). Please note that it is not recommended that data is saved locally on the device.
There are no spare parts currently available due to the low cost of a complete unit itself.
The first obvious difference is the screen size - 8.9" instead of 7". What is not so obvious is the screen resolution increases to 1024 x 600, and this means a lot less scrolling around websites, as well as being physically bigger. The device itself is only marginally larger - around 5mm in width. The webcam is a higher resolution - 1.3 megapixels instead of 0.3. The memory is larger - 1GB instead of 512mb, the processor is the same but runs at full speed of 900MHz instead of being 'clocked down' to 600 MHz. The storage capacity is larger too - 12GB for the Windows device and 20GB for the Linux. Finally the mouse pad is wider, with the keyboard remaining the same size, and the speakers move to the underneath.
In summary the larger screen is easier on your eyes, with less scrolling on websites, video and still photographs will be better quality, and the device will run faster with greater storage.
The product is intended to be a pupil's primary device. You can transfer files via SD card or USB stick, save within your Learning Platform environment or to the users home directory within CC3/CC4. You cannot synchronise it like a PDA.
The miniBook has a host of ways to interface to other devices, including 3 USB ports, integrated card reader. The miniBooks with the Celeron processors do not include Bluetooth, and we do not currently offer an optional dongle for the Linux version. For the Windows version, any USB Bluetooth dongle would enable the use of Bluetooth with these miniBooks. All the new miniBooks with the Atom processor do have Bluetooth as standard.
The power consumption is approximately 680mA (for the 7" model), which is around half the power consumption of a normal notebook.
Access encyclopedias, atlases, videos and much more using Living Library and a miniBook. Including handpicked web links and regular curriculum spotlights you can use this vast online reference resource across the whole school from £185. Perfect for preparation and class work alike.
