Product Overview
This service provides space on RM's centrally managed Web servers for you to publish your school's Web site. You don't need all the expensive hardware, software and support - you just upload your site and let us deal with the rest.
Choosing the right features from your Web hosting provider is essential for a successful presence on the Internet.
- You have a choice of setting up your Web site on a Microsoft Windows® or Redhat Linux server.
- You have a range of different Web space options.
- All servers are housed in a secure, state of the art hosting facility with power resilience and environmental monitoring systems.

- Visitors have faster access to your Web site, increasing its potential and its value to the school.
- A hosted Web site has a much lower technical overhead than a school-based server.
- School resources available at home/out of hours.
- A site from which to access Web mail.
Please Note:
A word of warning about cheap Web Hosting
There are many Web hosting accounts available that appear very inexpensive. These can offer good value, but always remember that you get what you pay for. If your Web site is important, then don't buy a £4.99 a month hosting plan and expect tremendous customer support or even high levels of reliability.
That's not to say that you couldn't find great performance for £4.99 a month, but there is a limit to what can be provided at such a low cost. Low priced hosting plans are also crammed together with thousands of other customers on a single Web server - reliability and performance invariably suffers.
Technical Information
When you order RM Web hosting, you'll need to decide whether to have your Web site hosted on a Windows® or Linux server. Whether you choose Windows® or Linux is solely dependent on your Web site development, eg if your site is built using ASP then you should choose a Windows® server, and if it uses PHP then you should choose a Linux server.

What features and scripting do Windows® servers support?
- FrontPage 2002 Extensions
This is a 'what you see is what you get' HTML editor and Web site administration tool from Microsoft. As an HTML editor, FrontPage is designed to hide the details of HTML code from the user, making it possible for anyone to easily create Web sites.
- ASP
Allows you to add dynamic content to your Web site, such as a blog, online shop or content management system.
- ASP.NET
A set of .NET classes used to create client-side and server-side applications.
- Database Connection
What features and scripting do Linux servers support?
- PHP
One of the most effective scripting languages to be found on the Internet. It offers a huge number of options. Just a few lines of PHP code can execute tasks which would be achieved with some difficulty in other languages. The fact that PHP code can be inserted directly alongside HTML makes the language all the more flexible.
- CGI
CGI scripts are small applications that run within your Web space and can provide interactivity. Common CGI scripts include Guestbooks and Forms.
- Perl
An interpretive programming language, especially designed for processing text. Because of its strong text processing abilities, Perl has become one of the most popular languages for writing scripts.
- MySQL
An open source Relational Database Management System that uses Structured Query Language. Information is stored in 'Tables' which can be thought of as the equivalent of Excel spreadsheets. A single MySQL database can contain many tables at once and store thousands of individual records. It's fast, reliable and flexible.
