RM MiniBook - the tough cookie

The RM MiniBook is the perfect device for the learner as it is the toughest little netbook you can get. It has a rubber mounted screen and hard drive that can survive being dropped from a desk; a carry handle to help prevent dropping in the first place; a splash-proof keyboard and a thicker, tougher case. Choose pre-installed Windows® 7 Professional Edition to work with one of the most multimedia friendly, interactive Windows operating systems ever.

Designed for Education

"Great little Netbook. I needed something small for my reception children and this looked good on screen. I was not disappointed. The keyboard is great for little fingers but good against small spills. A great clear display." Dan Brinsdon, Teacher
Robust - thick, tougher case and impact-resistant rubber housing for the screen and the hard disk combined, make the RM MiniBook drop resistant to table height (70cm)

Personalised learning - with its carry handle, portable size and functionality the RM MiniBook is ideal for any situation, inside or out

Wireless suitable for education - with 5GHz wirelss as standard the RM MiniBook is suitable for any classroom environment, especially where you have a number of students logging on at once

Intel® learning series software suite - at the heart of Intel® Learning Series is the Intel-powered classmate PC, which comes preinstalled with a some really useful classroom software for teachers, and students. Find out more about the Intel® Learning Suite on Intel's website

Why 5GHz wireless?

Because it's faster. In an environment where 30 learners are logging in at the same time, often looking at rich content, you need speed. 5GHz has many more available channels than 2.4GHz, that means less interference between netbooks. Fewer devices use the the 5GHz channels to communicate so interference from phones and fire alarms is greatly reduced.

CC4 Ready

Please note: systems configured as Community Connect 4 stations are pre-installed and ready for immediate connection to an existing Community Connect 4 network without needing to be rebuilt. If you require a standalone system, please choose "'Vanilla' Network / Standalone". Systems configured as a Community Connect 4 station: please ensure you have purchased the appropriate Connect License. CC4 ready machines bought without a licence have to be a replacement machine on the Network as opposed to an additional machine. CC4 Windows 8 ready machines will be available with the release of CC4.4 in 2013

The drivers are not available for Windows XP - Windows XP was introduced in 2001 and is now 3 generations old (Vista and Windows 7), by end 2012 we will have moved again to Windows 8. Microsoft are providing support for XP up until 2014 however as of October 2010 we are only able to sell a PC with Windows XP pre-installed as a "custom image". It is this exception which allows us to ship CC3 ready systems to customers.

RM face a developing issue whereby some of our hardware suppliers are no longer developing drivers for Windows XP; without drivers we cannot supply CC3 systems. The implication to customers who still use CC3 networks is that where ranges do not offer XP support they will not be able to join these devices to their network as fully managed clients. This applies equally to 3rd party hardware as it does to RM hardware. A compromise does exist in the form of RM Connector which allows Windows 7 clients to be joined to a CC3 domain. This offers some but not all of the manageability of standard CC3 client.

Examples of this trend in availability are easy to find. The next generation Atom processor from Intel named Cedar Trail offers no XP support. No supplier will be able to provide Cedar Trail based products with XP or CC3 support. Secondly, the next generation Notebook from RM will not have complete coverage of XP drivers. The platform will feature USB 3.0 hardware and this will be supported in Windows 7 by the relevant driver, in XP this is not the case. Although this particular example isn't considered critical and RM plan to offer this platform as a CC3 solution with appropriate messaging, it is an indication of a trend in the industry.

Forecasting XP support for 2013 is difficult but we cannot confidently say that XP drivers will continue to be available on new products.
