In this blog, we will recount the rich history of the RM Seminars brought to you by the people responsible for the formation of these quintessential events.
Introducing our CEO – David Brooks
Some of you may be aware that David was one of the early founders of the events dating back to the early 1990s, when the team rented out small rooms and drove around the UK in an old Ford Sierra.
1. What made you start the RM Seminars?
“As part of professionalising our support offering in the 1990s we decided we needed to run regional seminars to help customers with our products and for them to feel they were getting a bit more value for the support contracts we were now charging for.”
David also mentioned that the RM Seminars were formed at the same time as the launch of RM’s new network (RM Net LM) and provided a great opportunity to market the new product.
Today, the RM Seminars are open to anyone who simply has an interest in education and technology, whether you are an existing customer or not and regardless of your network.
2. How have the seminars changed/evolved over time?
“In 1992, when we ran the first seminar, there were two of us in the team and we transported all the equipment (a server, a desktop and a printer) and the written materials around to the events. We then spent the whole day talking to the assembled customers in a single room from 9 am – 4 pm (with a quick lunch). Things have improved significantly from those days!”
Today, due to the popularity of the RM Seminars today, our dedicated and skilled events team face many logistical obstacles, but always manage to rise to the challenge!
3. What is one of your favourite memories of the Seminars?
“We turned up to one seminar in Cardiff expecting 30 customers. Over 70 turned up and the room was far too small. It was standing room only and at lunchtime I had to help make sandwiches in the hotel kitchen. We got a standing ovation at the end of the day.”
We still help out with the catering from time to time when the venue needs a little helping hand! Give us a smile Nick?
One thing is for sure, the RM Seminars will continue to provide a great environment where like-minded people can come together, network and exchange best practice for education technology and take a more innovative look at the way technology is embedded throughout schools.
