Schools in Haringey are about to get an inspiring boost in the form of a high-tech classroom designed by students from all areas of the borough.
The Tecxitement Room, which opens on Wednesday 14 September, is located in Heartlands High School, Wood Green. Filled with an inspiring mixture of the latest technology (such as green screen film kit, stop motion animation, Macs and iPads) and innovative furniture (including table tops made of recycled yoghurt pots), the entire room has been designed for pupils by pupils. In total, 11 pupils have worked on the project over 10 months.
Carol Ellis, Senior Education Development Manager at RM Education says: "Creating an exciting, multi-purpose space means that teachers can use it in different ways to inspire their pupils; share best practice and collaborate with each other across Haringey."
The Tecxitement Room is open to secondary schools across the Borough to enable them to test out new technology and to help them share and develop ICT skills. Babar Mirza, Director of ICT at Northumberland Park Community School comments: "It encourages creativity. It's easy to get students to engage in bog standard ICT but this brings in new ideas and brings a new dimension to ICT. It brings us up to date with what ICT is all about these days.
"With this room, the whole environment will change and the motivation will change. Ultimately it's about attainment. We've got to affect the attainment level."
Councillor Lorna Reith, Haringey Council's Cabinet Member for Children, will open The Tecxitement Room to secondary schools across the Borough. The facility will enable schoolchildren to test out new technology and to help them share and develop ICT skills.
The Tecxitement Room will continue to be developed beyond the initial launch; budget has been set aside to ensure that technology can be updated and that innovation can stay alive.
Media are invited to attend the launch and join teachers, pupils and members of Haringey Council.
