The DfE has published Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) for 2026. The new KCSIE comes into force on 1 September. Annex C in KSCIE 2026 summarises the changes since the last edition.
On review, there's a shift from previous editions of KCSIE from procedural compliance towards a focus on professional curiosity and earlier identification of risk and vulnerability. Read on for my quick guide to changes.
What's changing?
-
Mental health guidance has been significantly expanded, and more focus has been given to early identification of risk across all staff (not just DSLs).
-
Deepfake has been named explicitly for the first time, with updated language around AI-generated nude imagery.
-
Misogyny receives more attention, with a focus on where it intersects with harmful sexual behaviour.
-
Increased guidance on the DSL role, covering skills and experience requirements and robust cover arrangements.
-
Updated filtering and monitoring guidance to reflect the growing risks from AI-generated content.
-
Updated references to data protection legislation and schools’ privacy notices.
Practical steps you can take ahead of September
-
Define roles – DSL, IT, senior leaders, and safeguarding staff should have clear responsibilities.
-
Test and review – Schedule regular checks of your policies, procedures, training and materials.
-
Tailor policies – Adjust filtering for different year groups and needs, ensuring educational resources remain accessible.
-
Integrate with safeguarding – Use monitoring data to support child protection processes.
-
Engage staff – Ensure all staff know how to report blocked/unblocked sites and safeguarding concerns.
