RM signs contract for digital delivery of TIMSS 2027 study

RM - the global EdTech, digital learning and assessment solutions provider - has signed a contract with IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) to provide the digital platform for TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) 2027.

TIMSS is the longest-running large-scale international assessment of mathematics and science, assessing students at both the fourth and eighth grades. Data from TIMSS are used to enable countries to make evidence-based decisions to improve education policies. For TIMSS 2023, the latest cycle of the study, more than 650,000 students in 64 countries participated. IEA used RM’s Assessment Master to conduct the assessments digitally for the first time in 2023 and, continuing this cooperation, RM will now deliver the next assessment in 2027.

RM’s Assessment Master will support the delivery of the study within strict timescales, providing an engaging and interactive platform for students and enabling global reach through multilingual testing. The digital format also opens the door to more innovative question types that go beyond traditional paper-based assessments, helping students demonstrate deeper understanding across a range of content and cognitive domains.

Assessment Master supports TIMSS 2027 in collecting open responses in a multitude of graphical formats and in multilingual environments. TIMSS 2027 will use automated scoring and machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI) to enhance scoring accuracy, combining automated marking with AI-assisted human review to ensure fairer, more consistent evaluation of student performance.

TIMSS 2027 will mark the ninth cycle since the study's inauguration in 1995. It will collect detailed information about curricula, curricular implementation, and the context of schooling for mathematics and science internationally.

We are delighted to be working with IEA to deliver the internationally recognised TIMSS survey. After the success of delivering TIMSS 2023 digitally, we are proud that RM Assessment Master has been selected again as the platform for TIMSS 2027, which will benefit from further advances in assessment and scoring technology. We look forward to working together to help deliver this important study, and better understand how students learn and shape global education policy.

Business Growth Director, RM

IEA and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College are pleased to be working with RM to adapt the Assessment Master to the exacting demands of TIMSS 2027. This latest cycle will introduce exciting advancements and innovative new assessment items to capture rich data about the breadth and depth of these subjects as they are taught in the participating countries.
