A platform’s feature list tells you what it can do. The harder question is how those capabilities behave when a high-stakes assessment reaches a real candidate, a busy assessment team, a distributed marking cohort or an unexpected operational pressure.

For awarding bodies, selecting a digital assessment platform is therefore more than a software comparison. It is a decision about assessment integrity, candidate experience, operational resilience, and the confidence placed in every result.

The following criteria provide a practical framework for evaluating an end-to-end digital assessment system.


1. Coverage across the full assessment lifecycle

Digital assessment becomes difficult to manage when content creation, exam delivery, marking, and reporting sit in separate systems. An end-to-end platform should support the full assessment journey, from authoring and quality assurance through to results and review.

Look for capabilities that connect:

  • Assessment and item creation
  • Item banking and version control
  • Exam assembly and scheduling
  • Candidate registration and access management
  • Digital exam delivery
  • Script management and e-marking
  • Moderation, standardisation, and quality assurance

The strongest digital assessment platforms are not necessarily those with the longest feature lists. They are the ones that help awarding bodies protect standards while making the assessment experience workable for candidates, markers, and operational teams.
