The RM SafetyNet Development Team has been working hard over the last couple of months to ensure the Google Manifest V3 update is applied to both the Chrome and Edge SafetyNet Go Extensions.
What is Manifest V3?
Manifest V3 is the latest version of the Chrome extension platform, designed to enhance the security, privacy, and performance of extensions. It introduces changes that impact how extensions interact with the browser, including deprecating the blocking version of the webRequest API and introducing the declarativeNetRequest API for content filtering. These changes are intended to make extensions more secure and efficient, while also limiting the potential for extensions to snoop on user data.
You may already have received our communications, but these extensions have now been released and there are actions to be taken by customers to ensure that the extensions continue to work on their devices.
SafetyNet Go - Edge
The Edge extension has been built to auto-update and has been doing so since last Friday across many of our schools – this means that you will now see the V3 extension being applied to your devices. We recommend devices are rebooted (if they haven’t been already) in order for the extension to be pulled onto devices using the SafetyNet Go extensions.
SafetyNet Go - Chrome
The Chrome device, released today (30th June) requires a manual update – you can find instructions on how to do this here.
There are two steps for the Chrome extension – remove the old extension and immediately replace with the new extension.
We recommend devices are rebooted once the removal of the old extension and implementation of the new extension has happened in order for the extension to be pulled onto devices using the SafetyNet Go extensions.
The old extensions (using Manifest V2) will stop working by the end of July, so its important devices are updated with the new extension as soon as possible.
If the extension isn’t updated, your SafetyNet Go filtering will stop working.
There’s no cost for the upgrade – but you will need to take action to remove the old extension and deploy the new version.
Our Teams are here to help, so if there is anything you aren’t sure of, please get in touch.
Please keep your eye out for more exciting SafetyNet news in the coming weeks – our teams have been busy upgrading our platform to ensure the security and flexibility of our users.
